Here are some questions we can ask ourselves before we share the story:
  1. Is it yours to share? Is it about you or did someone share it with you in confidence? Proverbs 20:19 “Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets; therefore do not associate with a simple babbler.”
  2. Does it paint the person you’re talking about in a good light? 1 Corinthians 13 talks about what love is - it doesn’t expose, it protects. When you tell that story, are you protecting the one it’s about?
  3. Would you say it if the person was sitting right there? Proverbs 18:8 “The words of a whisperer are like delicious morsels…”
  4. Would you tell the story if an elder, your husband, or a godly older woman were listening? Speak like someone is listening who we want to be like. Titus 2:3-5 “Not slanderers, to be self-controlled, kind…”
  5. Is it true? Every fact, every detail. Colossians 3:8 “Do not lie to one another seeing that you have put off the old self…” or Proverbs 16:28 “A dishonest man spreads strife, and a whisperer separates close friends.”
  6. Is it looking to the interest of self or others? Phil. 2:3-4 “Do nothing from selfish ambition, but look to the interests of others.” Or proverbs 26:20 “For lack of wood the fire goes out, and where there is no whisperer, quarreling ceases.”
  7. Is it kind? Ephesians 4:32 “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”
